On January 30, the Polish News Agency reported that Poland would participate with peacekeeping troops in peacekeeping operations for the United Nations.
The report said that 50 Polish soldiers and related staff will be participating in peacekeeping operations for the Central African Republic. Poland will provide 12 million złoty (about USD 4 million) in funds for this cause. On January 29, the President of the Republic of Poland had signed a directive to participate in these peacekeeping operations.
It is reported that Polish peacekeeping troops will be stationed in the Central African Republic for six (6) months and, together with the French army, conduct peacekeeping tasks authorized through a resolution by the United Nations Security Council.
Long-term instability in the Central African Republic has recently been exacerbated by an armed conflict between groups, leading to a serious humanitarian crisis. On December 5, 2013, the UN Security Council passed a resolution authorizing the African Union, which is led by international support groups and French troops, to protect civilians and maintain order in the Central African Republic.
